Island Park NY Yellow Pages

Island Park is a village home in Hempstead on the South Shore of Long Island. Phineas T. Barnum purchased around 5 acres of land in 1889 along with the neighborhood of Barnum Island to have a winter home for his traveling circus. The village had also been known as Barnum Island and Hog Island. Island Park became incorporated in 1926. Prior to this, Europeans drove Indians east and settled the area. The area was mainly farms for hogs, thus the reason of the name which was used from 1665 until 1874.
Island Park has its own school district which is considered one of the smallest in New York City with only two school serving 1,270 students which are Lincoln Orens Middle School and Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School. The district also serves Harbor Isle and Barnum Island. The community has four churches, a public library, and a variety of shops, restaurants, and businesses. The most popular attraction in Island Park is Shell Creek Park where families can enjoy tennis, basketball, and various other sports on the ballpark. Lido Beach is also a very nice quiet beach for relaxing and enjoy the day.
